Overview
Our Licentiate qualification builds on the skills learnt in the initial teacher training qualification and combines this with the knowledge and experience that come with practice as a teaching practitioner. This is a higher level teaching qualification and as such, you need to show the ability to teach candidates at Advanced 1 level.
Requirements
In order to apply to take the Licentiate exam you need to have one of the following:
- Theatre Dance: You must have passed DDE or Associate Diploma in the relevant genre and have passed the Advanced 1 examination in the relevant genre.
- Dancesport: You must be 21 or above, hold an Associate in the relevant genre and be an experienced teacher.
- All genres: Teachers who do not hold the above qualifications but have significant teaching and/or performing experience can apply through the ISTD’s Accreditation of Experiential Learning (APEL) process to access this qualification. For more information please visit our Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning page and contact hqualifications@istd.org.

Training will normally take place with an approved teacher or examiner.

Progressing your journey
After successful completion, candidates are eligible to apply for Full Membership of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and are eligible to enter candidates for examinations (please note: teachers granted Full Teaching membership with a Dancesport Licentiate alone will only be able to enter pupils for exams in Dancesport genres). You may consider applying to the Society to become an Approved Dance Centre or DDE Approved Tutor.
You could also consider combining the Licentiate with the level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy. Successful completion of the Licentiate would exempt you from Unit 4 of the DDP.
