Modern Theatre dance is a rhythmic dance style rooted in musical theatre, which originated in America. It is often seen in musical productions and is known for its dynamic theatrical qualities. Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Modern Theatre also incorporates jazz, lyrical and contemporary dance styles into its examination syllabus. Modern Theatre Dance defies a single permanent definition. This is largely due to its ability to adapt, develop and evolve with the changing fashion in dance.
In the 1920s, America was widely recognised as the home of the modern stage musical. The British dance pioneer Zelia Raye visited the country to gain first hand experience of its dance scene.
Through a carefully planned and well-tried examination syllabus, which combines modern dance, jazz, and other dance styles, young people are trained to become disciplined and versatile dancers who have a professional attitude toward dance.
With close ties to the profession, the faculty ensures that the programme of events and course reflects the diversity of modern dance. Holding events with invited guests from the world of theatre to provide master classes and insight into the genre. The highlight of the event calendar is the Janet Cram Awards. The Junior, Senior and Premier awards are for boys and girls from 8 - 16 years old who are trained in the work of the faculty.
