What levels are available for the Class Exams?

There are six levels of Class Exams, ranging from Class Exam 1 to Class Exam 6. Each level builds on the skills and knowledge developed in the previous levels, but progression through the levels is not mandatory.

How are the Class Exams structured?

Each Class Exam consists of 9-10 exercises selected from the Modern Theatre syllabus, including a teacher’s dance and a bow. Class Exams 5 and 6 also include a dance vocabulary sequence choreographed by the teacher. The exam is divided into three sections and is delivered solely by the teacher.

Where are the Class Exams held?

Class Exams take place in the students’ own dance studios, providing a familiar and comfortable environment for the assessment.

What is the duration of each Class Exam?

The duration of the exams ranges from 15 minutes for Class Exam 1 to 30 minutes for Class Exam 6.

Are there specific age requirements for Class Exams?

The recommended minimum age for students to participate in Class Exams is five years old, with a 60-day grace period. There is no upper age limit.

What are the fees for the Class Exams?

Exam fees range from £28.75 to £35.75, depending on the level.

What prior learning is required to enter a Class Exam?

Although candidates can progress through each level sequentially, it is not mandatory. Students can start at any level suitable to their skills and experience.

Can teachers deliver Class Exams in different languages?

Yes, international teachers can deliver Class Exam instructions in a language appropriate for their candidates.

What do students receive after completing a Class Exam?

Students receive an individual mark, an attainment grade, and a certificate along with a report.

Is identification required during the exam?

Yes, all candidates must wear a number securely attached to their dancewear. This number must match the official timetable to ensure the examiner can identify each candidate accurately.

What is the required attire for Class Exams?

Candidates can wear any appropriate dancewear, similar to the requirements for graded exams. Bare feet are preferred, but split sole shoes or foot thongs are also acceptable.

Is remote filming available for Class Exams?

Yes, there is an option to film the Class Exams across one academic year, especially designed for SEND students. Teachers can film each section independently and submit them as a complete exam once all sections are finished.

Can teachers assist students during the Class Exams?

Yes, teachers can provide encouragement and support during the exam. They can repeat exercises if necessary but must ensure all candidates repeat the sequence, not just one student. However, the exam is not intended for teaching or correcting technical details.

How should teachers manage the space during the exam?

Teachers should ensure candidates are well-spaced and rotate lines regularly, especially if there are 4-6 candidates. During the dance, all students should be visible, and no individual dancer should be highlighted as a soloist.

Are teachers allowed to operate the music during the exam?

Yes, teachers can operate the music themselves or arrange for a music operator to assist.
