EXAMINATIONS

What is a typical exam day like?

Every dance examination will be different but we can outline a suggested outline of an exam day to give you an idea of what your child might experience during their dance examination.

When you arrive:

  • The exam might take place at a different venue to your normal studio.
  • When you arrive at the location your teacher or the exam centre will greet you and show you where to change and wait with your parents/guardian or teacher.
  • Only those taking the exam, the examiner and accompanist - if required, will be allowed in the exam room.

What to wear:

  • All students are asked to be well presented, with neat hair and no jewellery (unless part of a costume). Each genre may have specific requirements, so please be sure to ask your dance teacher on the suggested attire.

Exam time:

  • Exam length will vary according to the genre and grade.

In the exam room:

  • This is your opportunity to demonstrate all you have learnt.
  • You’ll be welcomed by the examiner.
  • The examiner will say hello and ask you to demonstrate exercises. They will be focused on your performance, so won’t be chatting with you throughout the session. Once you’ve completed your exam, the examiner will thank you and ask you to leave the room for the next candidates.
  • The examiner isn’t allowed to tell the teacher anything about your performance.
  • Examination marks are sent directly to the ISTD and these are logged.

Certificates and medals

  • Will be sent to your school within 6 weeks.

The results:

  • We love to see our students celebrating their successes across social media, so please share any celebration/certificate images with us on social media (with relevant parental consent), tag us @istddance and use the hashtag #ISTDExamSuccess #ISTDExamTime
