At Hillingdon Theatre Dance Centre (HTDC), dance is more than just movement - it’s about belonging, believing, encouraging, and achieving. With over 50 years of history and more than 300 students, HTDC has built an inclusive dance community where every dancer is supported to develop confidence, self-worth, and technical skill.
As Principal of HTDC since 2012 and a teacher of ISTD Tap, Modern Theatre, and Jazz at Wycombe Abbey School for 13 years, I’ve had the privilege of guiding countless students through their dance journeys. Over the years, I’ve seen the dance world evolve, and with it, the ways we support students in achieving their goals. One of the most exciting developments has been the introduction of ISTD Modern Theatre Class Examinations, which have brought new opportunities to our students.
Why class examinations matter
Class Examinations offer a fantastic alternative for students who may not wish to pursue the traditional graded route but still want a structured way to develop and demonstrate their skills. These exams provide an excellent mix of technical progression and enjoyment, ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, ability, or experience, has the chance to achieve.
For those who take just one class per week or start dancing later and wish to stay with their age group, Class Exams provide an accessible and rewarding path. They focus on mastering fundamental techniques while incorporating elements of freedom and expression through travelling sequences, free music, and Combination Steps. Our students particularly love the opportunity to perform their own dance for the examiner, adding a personal touch to their assessment.
Building confidence in a supportive environment
One of the greatest advantages of Class Exams is the confidence they instill in our students. Being able to enter the exam room with their teacher creates a reassuring atmosphere, making the experience less intimidating—especially for those who struggle with anxiety or self-doubt. At HTDC, we run mindset sessions and provide regular staff training to better support students through emotional challenges, reinforcing our commitment to nurturing their self-esteem alongside their dance technique.
A flexible and inclusive approach
Having the option to study for either a Class Exam or a regulated exam has added incredible depth to our training programme. The combination allows us to tailor learning experiences to suit individual students, ensuring that everyone has a pathway that aligns with their needs and ambitions. The inclusivity and accessibility of Class Exams mean that more students can celebrate achievement, progress safely, and most importantly, enjoy their dance journey.
We are incredibly grateful to the ISTD for introducing this opportunity, and we look forward to continuing to offer Modern Theatre Class Examinations as an integral part of our dance training at HTDC. Dance is for everyone, and these exams help us reinforce that belief every day.
