The day started with an exciting banner parade, where all 32 schools competing had the opportunity to come out with two representatives for each school and share a moment of pride and delight, before the first event began. The hall at the Guildford Spectrum was electric and all competitors were ready to perform and demonstrate to the adjudicators their routines and performances.
The order of the day started with the first qualifier event, Set Dance, followed by the second qualifier event, Rock’n’Roll, before the Solo’s and Pairs events later in the day.
The standard of technique and floor presence was unbelievably high this year and it was an absolute honour to watch such determination and love for dance, of which I saw on the floor throughout the day.

The atmosphere was amazing throughout and the icing on the cake was when the ISTD President, Shirley Ballas, arrived to present the Set Dance awards to all winners. This is a special memory to cherish for all the dancers and made the already fantastic day, even more astounding. It was an honour to see her receive her Honorary Fellowship Award from Chief Executive, Ginny Brown too and hear how much it meant to Shirley to be given this highly esteemed accolade. An Honorary Fellow is described in the Society’s Rules and Standing Orders as being awarded for ‘exceptionally meritorious services to the art of dancing.’ As such it is the highest mark of honour that the Society confers. As Shirley is a world-leading authority on Latin dance, and as our President, Council were unanimous in their decision to bestow this award.
The floor was swamped with vibrant colour, shimmer and sparkle throughout, with the beautiful costumes on every event. Everyone looked immaculate and it was clear to see how much passion the dancers have for performing.
In conclusion, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the dancers for making it to Grand Finals alone, as well as those who made the finals and won awards. It was an immensely high standard.
We really look forward to Grand Finals in 2025 as its running over a weekend and is going to be incredible if it follows in the same direction of this year!
