The History of the Cecchetti Scholars Programme 2025
In 1952, with the encouragement of Cyril Beaumont, Nora Roche and Barbara Geoghegan set up a scheme for promising young dancers. Eminent teachers would give up their time and teach a free, non-syllabus class, once a week to 12 students.
Since then, the Scholarship Programme has evolved considerably and is supported and sponsored by The Cecchetti Society Trust. We hold our weekly lessons at Arts Educational School in Chiswick, on a Saturday from 1.30-5.30pm. The aim is to complement the training the student receives from their own teacher with the aim to strengthen technique, confidence and help the student to reach their full potential. We also advise on vocational training and auditions to those thinking of taking their training further.
Training
In conjunction with the ballet classes, we have developed a Pilates-based Body Conditioning programme. This is constantly monitored and improved to meet the needs of the current students. Pointe work is included. Basic pointe and strengthening for Class 1 and a more technically difficult class for Class 2. Being on pointe is not a requirement to audition. This is very much a decision for their own teacher.
We are now able to also offer Contemporary classes, 4 or 5 times a term, for a nominal fee. At the end of each term, we invite a guest teacher, often from one of the vocational schools, to give a free class, a repertoire lesson or perhaps choreography. Then, of course, there is a ballet performance. Recently the Scholars have had the opportunity to perform at The Royal Opera House during the 100-year celebration of The Cecchetti Society Trust and the 120-year celebration of the ISTD.
Progression
We have past students who have gone on to vocational training and eventually became professionals. Past Scholars have performed with:
- The Royal Ballet
- English National Ballet
- The Royal Swedish Ballet
- Scottish Ballet
- Rambert Dance Company
- New Adventures – Matthew Bourne
Who can apply?
We are not looking for a finished product but a promising and enthusiastic dancer who will benefit from the programme.
We will consider any student working at a Grade 4/Standard 5 level and have their main training with a Cecchetti teacher. Students should be between 11 and 17 years old, but a younger student working at the required level might be considered.
