  5. An ISTD exam tour in Greece

14 April 2025

It was an absolute joy to return to examining in Greece this March, my first time back since before the pandemic. Greece has always held a special place in my heart, and the moment I stepped off the plane, I was reminded why. The warmth of the sun and the genuine hospitality of the Greek people offered the most heartfelt welcome.

1-7 March: Athens

My tour began in Athens, where I spent seven days visiting a wide range of schools in and around the capital. It was a delight to see such a breadth of ISTD work being presented, from Modern and Jazz to Contemporary. Teachers were visibly thrilled to have live examinations once again, and the students’ excitement was contagious. They had been eagerly preparing for this opportunity and were so proud to showcase their work.

I was particularly pleased to see schools embracing the new Modern “free” music playlists. These additions really bring fresh energy and musicality to the syllabus. I also observed the new body strengthening exercises being performed — students showed impressive strength and control, navigating floor work with both ease and power.

8-9 March: Kyparissia

From Athens, I travelled by coach through the breathtaking Tripoli mountains to Kyparissia, a scenic four-hour journey that reminded me how diverse and beautiful this country is. While in Kyparissia, I had the pleasure of meeting up with fellow examiner Susan Garrard and her husband for a much-needed catch-up. After years of only seeing colleagues on screens, those in-person moments felt extra special.

10-14 March: Thessaloniki

The final leg of my journey took me north to Thessaloniki, where I spent another four days examining, this time working with students from junior grades through to professional levels. The dedication and preparation from both teachers and students here was just as impressive.

A well-timed day off in Thessaloniki coincided with the vibrant Greek Independence Day parade — a wonderful surprise. Watching the parade was a visual feast, with traditional costumes rich in colour and intricate in detail. It was a beautiful reminder of the cultural pride and history that infuses every corner of this country.

15 March: A Heartfelt Return

My return to Greece has left me inspired and grateful for the passionate teachers, the talented students, and the resilient dance community that continues to grow stronger. Until next time, efharistó!
